Structure of Nail Nails are modifications of the epidermis and are horny plates corresponding to the claws or hoofs of animals. Nails are developed from the stratum lucidum of the nail bed and composed of densely packed keratinised cells. The nails protect the sensitive tips of the fingers and toes from damage. Their appearance, texture and thickness may be significant in certain diseases.
