Most parts of the skin are covered by hair either course or downy. No hair is found on the palms of the hand or soles of the feet. The roots of the hairs are found in the dermis.

Hairs are structures which develop in the hair follicles of the skin. Attached to the root of each hair is a minute muscle (erector pili) which causes the hair to become raised. This is more marked in animals. .

Near the root of each hair is a sebaceous gland which produces an oily substance (sebum), which helps to keep the skin supple and the hairs from becoming dry and brittle.

The color of the hair depends on the amount and type of pigment that is present
