Chapped lips  are the results of extreme drying and cracking of the lips. The lips lack normal sebaceous gland which provide oiliness for the skin else where.

Chapping commonly occurs in dry, cold, windy weather. Allergy to toothpastes, mouthwashes, chewing gums and soft drinks can also cause drying and dermatitis(cheilitis) of the lips leading to chapping.

Dehydration due to diarrhoea, vomiting, reduced water intake etc is also an important cause.

An interesting entity is : Lip Licking Dermatitis, caused by frequent licking of the lips and surrounding area. The saliva damages the lips further and when the saliva is evaporated, it exacerbates the problem.

Some people have sun sensitivity: Solar Cheilitis.

Chapped Lips: Tips

  1. Avoid excessive drying of the lips

  2. Apply lip balms when you go outdoors

  3. Avoid irritating toothpastes, gums, fizzy drinks etc

  4. Avoid lip licking: Always carry a lip balm when you go out

  5. Apply a lip cream with sun protection if you are sensitive to sun rays

  6. Drink lots of water and fresh juices

  7. Avoid spicy, hot food and alcohol

  8. Always apply moisturizing creams after food and drinks

  9. Take a vitamin B complex with C suppliment

  10. I also prescribe a mild steroid cream for short period to tide over the dermatitis part.
