Burns, if not given proper first aid and care can cause serious life long scarring. I get lots of cases of burn cases , especially in children, where mothers bring them after applying whatever is in the immediate vicinity, like ink, toothpaste and what not!

Everything except the needed:

 ice cold water!

Burns: Tips

  • Cool the burnt area immediately with ice cold water: plenty of it! Immerse the part, if possible, in cold water for 15-20 minutes, then and then only, go to the doctor, The first few seconds are minutes are important in preventing the ugly scars later on!

  • If the clothes are adherent to the skin or there are blebs, do not try to remove them. Leave it to the doctor

  • Remove the patient immediately from the area if there is additional dangers like fire

  • If the burns are superficial and the blebs are non tense, better leave them be.

  • The skin may be covered with antiseptic creams like silver sulfa diazine for better healing

  • If there is too much oozing I prefer to give a 2-3 day tulle dressings

  • Do not allow the raw skin to dust and potentially infective environmental exposures

  • If large area are involved, immediate medical care is essential. It is a medical emergency.

  • Drink lots of fluids and fruit juices with a pinch of salt and sugar to replace the fluids.

  • Doctors may prescribe IV fluid replacement if fluid loss is severe.
