Boils, or furuncles as they are known in medical
parlors, are the consequence
of staphylococcal bacterial infections of the hair follicles or the
glands in the skin.
Small,
localized and superficial ones do not require much treatment, pricking
with a sterile needle after a spirit swab and application of
antibiotic creams should do to clear them.
When
a boil becomes deeper and gets filled with pus, it is known as an abscess.
This requires immediate medical attention. Draining the abscess under
antibiotic coverage is the fastest way for a cure.
Boils: Tips
Wash
well with soap and water after sweating & outdoor trips
Avoid
occlusive dresses
Drink
lots of water and fresh fruit juices
Avoid
hot, spicy, fried fast foods
Take
lots of vegetables and fruits(except mango)
If
the boil is swelling up and causing distress, start hot compresses
3-4 times daily and consult a dermatologist
An
antibiotic cover is necessary and the boil may need to be drained
Never press a boil too hard when you are not taking antibiotics,
as this may cause systemic spread of infection (septicaemia).
Be
careful with boils in the danger area of face, that is the central
area between the nose and mouth and immediate surroundings. This area has
direct connections with the veins draining the
brain structures. Never press the boils in this area. Get
antibiotic treatment without delay!
If
you are getting recurrent boils, have a full check to rule out
immune debilitating diseases like diabetes
